Michigan Law Alumni Recognized as U-M Volunteer Leaders

John Nannes, ’73, and Irving Stenn Jr., ’55, are recipients of the 2017 Hermelin Awards, the University’s highest honor recognizing alumni volunteers.

Nannes, a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP in Washington, D.C., spearheaded one of the Law School’s most successful development initiatives—the Nannes 3L Challenge. He has served on numerous fundraising and advisory committees and currently chairs the Development and Alumni Relations Committee. He also mentors the next generation of MLaw alumni and supporters.

Stenn, who is retired from private practice in Chicago, is a tremendous supporter of the U-M

Museum of Art, as well as Michigan Law. With his father, he endowed a fund to honor law students demonstrating leadership, community engagement, and academic success. The Stenn Award is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon graduating students. In addition, Stenn has endowed a scholarship at the Law School. By providing full tuition, the scholarship helps make Michigan Law accessibleto the best of the best.

MacKinnon Wins Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award

This year, the Association of American Law Schools’ (AALS) Section on Women in Legal Education recognized Professor Catharine A. MacKinnon with the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award. MacKinnon, the Elizabeth A. Long Professor of Law at U-M and the long-term James Barr Ames Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard, is only the second woman to receive the honor, after Supreme Court Associate Justice Ginsburg herself.

Fall 2014 Impact

First Victors for Michigan Scholarship Awarded

In February 2014, an anonymous donor from the Class of 1951 and his wife gave nearly $300,000 to establish the Victors for Michigan Scholarship Fund. The donors wanted to support the Law School’s top funding priority and commemorate the newly launched Victors for Michigan campaign.
