For Denver-based Donor, Upholding Democratic Institutions Starts at Law School
Throughout his career in law and local government, Ford Wheatley, ’79, has firmly believed in the strength of American institutions and the nation’s democratic legacy. With a desire to ensure that this legacy endures for future generations, Wheatley established an endowed fund at the Law School to support research, teaching, and activities that reinforce the pillars of democracy.

For One Alumna, It’s All About Her Peers in Life, Work, and Giving Back
Trisha Rich has remained involved with Michigan Law as a dedicated volunteer since she graduated in 2005, even serving as co-chair of her alumni reunion committee for her five-, 10-, and 15-year milestones. “I love the education I received and the doors that Michigan Law has opened for me,” says Rich. “But the most important things I take from Ann Arbor are the dozens of important, tangible, real relationships with people I very much care about.”

Alumnus Commits to Appalachian Roots with New Scholarship Fund
Drawing on a growing concern for the region where he grew up and the country at large, George Jenkins, ’66, along with his wife, Gina, decided to launch the Gina and George Jenkins Aspirational Scholarship Fund, with the goal of benefiting students from central Appalachia.

New Student Fellowship to Bolster Internationalism at Michigan Law
“It’s been on my mind to do something that would allow me to leave a small footprint at one of my alma maters,” says Thomas Schürrle, LLM ’87. Schürrle and Alfred Wiederkehr, MCL ’68, co-founded the European Alumni Fellowship Fund to demonstrate to prospective students the strength of the Law School’s European alumni community.

Reflecting on Ann Arbor, Estate Lawyer Plans Support for the Next Generation
For George Smrtka, ’67, attending Michigan Law was a dream come true. “I applied to two other law schools, but Michigan was the top of the mountain for me. I never thought I could afford it, but the admissions counselor offered a scholarship for half of the tuition and the rest was covered through a loan. I also lived off-campus, washed dishes, and walked up a hill in the snow—both ways,” he laughs.

New Scholarship Supports Student Exploration
Bruce Vinokour, ’72, holds his law school experience in such high esteem that his wife, Stephanie, recalls it being one of the first topics he brought up when they met 27 years ago. “It was clear to me then, as it is today, that Michigan embraces students like Bruce, who love to learn, and allows them to explore and find their own path,” she says. “Because of that, it was only natural for us to give back.”
