Michigan Law Veterans Legal Clinic Opens
In November, Michigan Law celebrated the opening of the Veterans Legal Clinic, which offers veterans and, in some cases, their immediate families, legal help in matters such as family law, eviction, consumer problems, foreclosure, and employment cases.

Ken Salazar, ’81, received Michigan Law’s Distinguished Alumni Award at a special ceremony on March 18, as part of the Juan Luis Tienda Scholarship Banquet. Salazar delivered the keynote address at the annual banquet hosted by the Latino Law Students Association.

Fiske, ’55: 15 Years of Launching Government Service Careers
In 2001, Bob Fiske, ’55, HLLD ’97, created the Robert B. Fiske Jr. Fellowship Program for Government Service to encourage recent Michigan Law graduates to pursue positions as government lawyers. The fellowship pays both college and law school debt for three years plus a stipend; it has supported 49 fellows to date.

Dr. Mary Frances Berry Named 2016 Distinguished Alumna
Michigan Law has named Dr. Mary Frances Berry, PhD ’66, JD ’70, HLLD ’97, as a recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award, the Law School’s highest honor. Berry is one the nation’s leading activists for civil rights, gender equality, and social injustice.

New Scholarship Fund Focuses on Dual Degree Opportunities
Through the new Shaughnessy Family Scholarship Fund at Michigan Law, Jim Shaughnessy, JD/MPP ’79, wants to help Michigan Law students—particularly those in dual degree programs, who incur an extra year of educational expenses while foregoing a year’s income.

2014 Fiske Fellows Gratefully Pursue Their Passions
The Fiske Fellowship was established in 2001 by Robert Fiske, ’55, a senior counsel at Davis Polk & Wardwell and a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. Three-year fellowships are awarded annually to up to four Michigan Law graduates who serve as government lawyers.

With Planned Gift, John Reed Scholarship Fund Exceeds $1 Million Goal
When Dudley Godfrey, ’52 and fellow members of the Class of 1952 decided to establish the John Reed Scholarship Fund, they hoped it would grow to $1 million. Thanks in part the generosity of Dudley and his wife, Constance, the value of the fund now exceeds $1.2 million.

3L Challenge Celebrates 20 Years
Twenty years ago, the Law School faced two problems: declining state funding and a declining percentage of recent graduates who were becoming donors to the Law School. So John Nannes, ’73, came up with an idea: He would donate $250 to any Law School organization or activity that a 3L student chose, if the student agreed to make a gift to the Law School in each of the first three years after graduation.

They’ve risked their lives, incurred long separations from loved ones, and suffered injuries to serve their country. When they return home, military veterans often face legal barriers to basic needs. A new clinic at Michigan Law is committed to reversing that troubling pattern.
