For almost five decades, Professor James J. White, ’62, has been one of Michigan Law’s most revered professors, challenging and inspiring thousands of students in and out of the classroom. Today, he remains a beloved figure in the Quad, and the Professor James J. White Scholarship Fund has been established in his honor by several dedicated alumni.

Before the pandemic forced Michigan Law to postpone Senior Day in 2020, David Louison was chosen by his peers to deliver the student keynote.
A month or so into COVID-19 lockdown, as the Law School prepared an online celebration for the graduating 3Ls, LLMs, and SJDs—an in-person ceremony is planned for 2021—Louison went for a walk to consider what a virtual commencement speech could look like. “I was just thinking, ‘Am I going to do a speech at all?’”

David Santacroce, an associate dean for experiential education and a clinical professor of law, was selected as a recipient of the 2019 William Pincus Award for Outstanding Service and Commitment to Clinical Legal Education.

Law Training in the Fast Lane
A lawyer’s job is to present a client’s case with a compelling argument, so U-M’s undergraduate debate team has been a fertile ground for future Michigan Law students. “The only downside to my debate background is that when I became a professor, I had to learn to slow down my speech,” laughs Robert Hirshon, ’73, “because my students couldn’t follow me.”

Beny Appointed to U-M’s African Studies Center
Professor Laura Beny was appointed associate director of U-M’s African Studies Center (ASC) for the 2018–2019 academic year. The ASC, founded in 2008, provides strategic guidance and coordination for Africa-related education, research, and training activities on campus, and promotes opportunities for collaboration with African partners.

Paying It Forward After Paying a Steep Price
Most students make sacrifices to attend Michigan Law, but the biggest price Myint Zan paid came after graduation. Zan grew up in Mandalay, Burma, and during his LLM studies in Ann Arbor, the Burmese government invalidated his passport because he had not received the proper permissions to study in the United States.
