DLAW Class Explores Affirmative Litigation Opportunities for Detroit
As senior adviser and counsel to the mayor of Detroit, Eli Savit, ’10, knows that the legal challenges facing the city are vast. So vast, in fact, that there simply is no way for staffers to explore affirmative litigation opportunities. Such public interest lawsuits filed on behalf of the city could address topics like consumer protection, environmental justice, housing, and nuisance abatement.

Professors Daniel Halberstam and Gil Seinfeld have been appointed associate deans of the Law School by Dean Mark West. As of July 1, Halberstam is the associate dean for faculty and research and Seinfeld is the associate dean for academic programming.

Michigan Law’s Child Advocacy Law Clinic: Theory and Practice Come Together in Trial Experience
In 2014, a woman named Ashley came to Michigan Law’s Child Advocacy Law Clinic to help her gain custody of her children from her violently abusive husband. She met 2Ls Dani Angeli and Alanna Farber, who became her champions, working with Ashley on the case all the way through her trial.

Ban the Box Legislation Leads to Increase in Racial Discrimination
“Ban the Box” legislation seeks to open doors to employment for people with criminal records by barring employers from asking about records on employment applications. But a major study points to a serious unintended consequence of these laws: While they may indeed improve the prospects of people with records, this gain comes at the cost of encouraging a substantial increase in racial discrimination by employers.

L. Bates Lea China Exchange
Michigan Law was pleased to host two Bates Lea Exchange Professors from China during the fall 2015 semester: Professors Jie Cheng and Wei Cui. Cheng taught the course Constitutional Theory and Practice in China, and Cui, Taxation of Individual Income. The exchanges are made possible through the generosity of L. Bates Lea, ’49.
