So it was natural that she would look for a law school with strong international offerings, and she chose Michigan Law in no small part because of the Geneva Externship program.

Barbara J. Kacir, ’67, established the William J. Brattin Scholarship in 1990 in honor of her father. Jenna Neumann, a recipient of the Brattin Scholarshiop, is a 3L from Flint, Michigan, where she founded Chapter for Children, a program to promote literacy among future generations.

With the James G. Phillipp Law Professorship Fund, James Phillipp, ’66, supports a subject that is of personal interest and shares his gratitude to Michigan Law for setting him on his path to a fulfilling career. “I have always been interested in history of all kinds. Even more so now that I have retired to a spot where Ponce de León was quite possibly trooping through my yard some 500 years ago.”

China’s legal industry was just taking shape when Xiuhao “Rachel” Luo, LLM ’01, graduated in 1989 with her first law degree from Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou. Today, she is tackling the Wild West of social media retailing—along with compliance and regulatory work—as vice president of legal affairs for Amway China.

Tsiang, ’23, and Chiang: A Grandfather’s Legacy; A Grandson’s Gratitude
William Yat San Chiang never met his grandfather, Pao Li Tsiang, ’23. Chiang didn’t attend the University of Michigan, and he has only visited campus once, so that he could see the place that helped shape his grandfather.

L. Bates Lea China Exchange
Michigan Law was pleased to host two Bates Lea Exchange Professors from China during the fall 2015 semester: Professors Jie Cheng and Wei Cui. Cheng taught the course Constitutional Theory and Practice in China, and Cui, Taxation of Individual Income. The exchanges are made possible through the generosity of L. Bates Lea, ’49.
